Roots HR Consulting offers seminars designed to get critical information to Missouri small business owners.
All seminars are led by attorney Dave Nelson the owner of Roots HR Consulting. Attendance is capped at eight, so expect a lively, interactive session where you can ask questions, and have the specific issues your business is facing addressed.
Missouri Employment Law for Small Businesses: This three hour seminar covers the basics of the federal, state and local laws that apply to your small business and its employees. In my 20 years of experience, many problems small employers run into are the result of simply not knowing particular laws exist, or relying on common misconceptions about them. The topics we will discuss include:
- Federal, State and Local civil rights laws (discrimination, harassment and retaliation based upon gender, age, race, religion, disability, national origin, sexual orientation and more).
- Federal and State wage and hour laws (minimum wage, overtime, exemptions from overtime, breaks and meal times, final paycheck).
- How to properly categorize workers as employees or independent contractors, and the consequences of improperly designating them as contractors.
In addition to covering the operational details of the laws, we will also discuss strategies to minimize legal exposure, and how to spot potential problems early enough to intervene. This seminar is limited to eight attendees.

Will Your Salaried Employees Still Be Exempt from Overtime?: The U.S. Department of Labor’s new overtime rules may radically change which of your employees remain exempt from overtime. We will cover all of the changes the new regulation brings, review the other requirements for an employee to be exempt from overtime, and discuss strategies for bringing your small business into compliance quickly. The new regulation is effective December 1, 2016, so the time to start planning is now. This seminar is limited to eight attendees.
